April 20 is a day every stoner knows. It’s the closest thing we have to a dedicated weed holiday. And many of us want to celebrate accordingly.
But what’s the “right” way to celebrate cannabis? Should you go out and find some great 420 events, or is it more in the weed-smoking spirit to stay home and get high?
However you choose to celebrate 4/20 this year, our guide to the most popular celebrations and traditions will make planning easy-peasy-smoke-that-cheesy.
Most Watched Stoner Movies
Every list of top stoner movies is different.
That could be because we don’t have a set definition for what constitutes a “stoner” movie. If we focus only on movies with weed as a central plot point (or a way to advance the plot), the list becomes much simpler.
If we also consider movies that are “enhanced” by marijuana, we get a list like The Cannabist’s Top 20 Stoner Movies That Will Keep You Couch-Locked, which includes both pot-centric and pot-enhanced films.
10 Favorite 420 Films
- Up In Smoke (1978)
- The Big Lebowski (1998)
- Dazed and Confused (1993)
- Friday (1995)
- Pineapple Express (2008)
- Smiley Face (2007)
- Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle (2004)
- Easy Rider (1969)
- Half-Baked (1998)
- Reefer Madness (1936)
Of course, there are dozens of other incredible marijuana-themed (or marijuana-adjacent) movies and shows if you can’t find something you love in The Cannabist’s Top 10.
- Fast Times at Ridgemont High
- Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
- Super Troopers
- How High
- Dude, Where’s My Car?
If you prefer to keep your marijuana and movie plots separate, The Cannabist also compiled a list of 10 fan favorite films that people love watching while they’re high, even though the movies aren’t actually about cannabis.
10 Non-Weed Films to Watch with Weed
- Fantasia (1940)
- 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
- The Holy Mountain (1973)
- Blazing Saddles (1974)
- Spirited Away (2001)
- The Lord of the Rings (2001-2003)
- Star Wars (1977-1983)
- Donnie Darko (2001)
- Pulp Fiction (1994)
- Mulholland Drive (2001)
As a general rule, any movie that offers stunning visuals, great audio, laugh-out-loud humor, or thought-provoking discussion goes well with weed. That said, stick with a genre you like: if you’re in the mood for comedy, watch a comedy this April 20.

Best Songs to Get High To (According to Spotify)
There are over 40,000 420 themed playlists on Spotify.
If you listened to 5 of those playlists in their entirety every day, it would take almost 22 years to listen to every track.
Thankfully, Spotify released a list of the top 20 songs found in pot playlists. The list was from 2015, so it won’t include the latest weed-smoking anthems, but it’s a great resource if you’re trying to build out your playlist for April 20.

- Cheeze-Its
