Holidays are about tradition: family, merriment, giving to others, and – importantly – food.
But one thing is missing from the average holiday celebration: weed.
Whether you recognize Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Boxing Day, St. Lucia Day, the Fiesta of Our Lady of Guadalupe or none of the above, there aren’t many December traditions designed specifically to get you high.
And with so much time and energy spent decorating, hosting, traveling, and shopping, who has time to think about starting new holiday cannabis traditions?
If you don’t mind a cannabisless Christmas or a marijuana reprieve on New Year’s Eve, I’d like to wish you the best and I’ll see you next year. If you’re like me, though, and you’re dreaming of a green Christmas, here are a few easy cannabis holiday traditions you can introduce this year.
Cannabis-Inspired Holiday Décor
The right decorations can go a long way in setting a warm, welcoming tone for the holidays. But lights and trees and seasonal dinnerware aren’t for everyone.
If you’d rather think about lighting a joint than hanging the lights, create your own marijuana wreath (check out this great DIY from Leafly) or cannabis ornaments (use joints, nugs, or start with these 420-themed cutout templates).
A quick note about safety: If you have children or pets, make sure any décor that uses real marijuana is secure and out of reach.
Weed-Themed Holiday Entertainment in Boulder
If you’re looking for a fun way to ring in the New Year or pass time with visiting family (when the world reopens), grab tickets for a show at Boulder’s nationally recognized Fox Theatre. Voted 4th best music venue in the country according to Rolling Stone Magazine, The Fox is a must for every music lover living in or visiting Boulder.
If concerts aren’t your jam, many 420-friendly tour companies in Colorado offer New Year’s celebrations. Each event is different, and past years have included trips to Cheba Hut, a glass blowing demonstration, dispensary tours, and a Puff, Pass & Paint class. This is a BYOC (bring your own cannabis) event, so make sure you stop by Karing Kind before heading to Denver.
What if you don’t like crowds or you’d prefer something a little lower key or lower cost? Tune into the CannaYule Log livestream from Green Bee Life for the perfect ambiance.
Cannabis-Themed Holiday Entertainment at Home
Instead of reading the “Night Before Christmas” for the 50th time, give story-time a twist with our own Joint Before Christmas. And instead of Monopoly or Scrabble, top it all off by playing the Weed Pack from Cards Against Humanity. Not only are the new cards guaranteed fun, but the company donated all profits from the Weed Pack to the Marijuana Policy Project to aid in the fight for legalization.
Marijuana-Infused Noms and Nogs
The holidays just wouldn’t be the holidays without our favorite foods and drinks. If you have a big family (or a few picky eaters), it’s easy to end up with more food than you can eat. And leftovers can lose a bit of their luster after the first few days.
That’s why I recommend adding a marijuana-infused dish or drink to the menu. It’s an alternative to alcohol and a great go-to option when you aren’t able to get away to hit the bowl or vape. Leftovers are also a lot more fun when they get you high.
Make sure anything with THC is clearly labeled and kept separate from the THC-free options so you and your guests don’t accidentally dig into the wrong treats.
You can find a number of marijuana-infused takes on classic holiday recipes and drinks in this article from Cannabis Training University. Or indulge your sweet tooth with dessert recipes like Cannabis S’mores Pie or Oatmeal Canna Cookies.

Holiday traditions are what we make them, and there’s plenty of room to add a little more green to the season.
And while most of these holiday cannabis traditions focus on hosting or finding events in Boulder, don’t forget to take time for yourself when you need. If it feels like you never get a day to just smoke and recharge your internal batteries, take advantage of the busy travel week by staying home with a bong and your favorite show.
