Moonrocks, or moon rock weed, is the turducken of cannabis. A dense nug dipped in cannabis oil and rolled in kief.
Ever wonder why a caviar cone is so strong? That’s because you’re smoking moon rock weed. Strong bud covered in strong concentrate covered in crystals absolutely packed to the brim with cannabinoids.
As it turns out, moonrocks are surprisingly easy to make at home.
Here are step-by-step instructions for how you can make moon rock weed at home. (We even provide a few shortcuts if you can’t be bothered to properly make your own).
The Materials You’ll Need
Everything you need to make moonrocks can be purchased from your local dispensary. Or you can gather most of them on your own for an extra frugal trip to the moon.
- Dense nug
- Cannabis concentrate
- Kief
- Tweezers (recommended)
Consider the source of each ingredient. While the finished product may be strong enough that you won’t notice the difference, try combining flower and oil with the same flavor profile (or complimentary flavors).
Similarly, consider the effects of the strain and oil you choose. Combining two strong indicas will generally deliver a heavier body high than an indica flower and sativa oil. And combining a high-THC strain with CBD oil will give you a mellower experience.
Don’t worry about the kief. Unless you’re very high and very organized, you separating kief by its effects.
Step-by-Step /Instructions to Make Your Own Moonrocks
DIY moon rock weed is just a few quick steps away.
- Grab a dense nug of your favorite strain (or a lesser strain you’re trying to spruce up)
A larger nug will require more hash oil and kief. But try not to worry about the size of the bud unless you’re running low on supplies.
Hold the nug firmly near the base with your tweezers to ensure a secure grip and make it easier to rotate.
- Cover the marijuana flower in hash oil
Any cannabis oil will do, but we recommend CO2 oil for a cleaner, more flavorful experience.
One of the easier, cleaner methods is to hold the nug in the tweezers and use an oil syringe or eyedropper to trace a tight spiral (like tinsel on a Christmas tree if you had too much tinsel).
You can use a dab tool or small brush to gently spread the oil around the nug for more even hits, but it isn’t strictly necessary—especially if you want tamer moonrocks.
For stronger moonrocks, fill a small container with hash oil and roll the weed directly in the oil. Don’t let the flower soak in the oil, though, or you could saturate the flower and end up with moonsoup rather than moonrocks. (Still fun to smoke, but not what we’re going for right now.)
- Sprinkle the oil-covered weed in kief
If you’ve been using a grinder with a kief catcher, it shouldn’t take too long before you have enough kief to make your own moonrocks.
Still holding the flower in your tweezers, roll the oil-covered bud in the kief until there’s a fairly thick layer of kief crystals.
If you don’t want to get oil on your kief-catcher, you can sprinkle the crystals over the oil-covered bud by hand. Just make sure you have a paper or container below the flower to catch any kief that doesn’t stick to the oil.
- Let the moon rocks dry
It will take a little time for the cannabis flower time to soak in the hash oil.
Depending on how much oil you used, your nugs could dry in as little as a few hours or as long as 3-7 days.
When the moonrocks are ready, pack a bowl or roll a joint. And enjoy!

Even Faster, Easier DIY Moonrocks
If you just can’t wait for your moon rock weed to dry… or if you don’t have enough oil and kief to make a full nug… or you just can’t be bothered to follow the steps above, here’s an even faster, easier way to make your own moonrocks concoction.
It may not be as impressive as pulling out your own DIY moon rock, but it’s sure to please.
Using a bowl (or bong)
- Fill a bowl with weed
- Add a drop or two of cannabis oil
- Sprinkle kief on top
Rolling a joint
- Load the paper with flower
- Add a line of cannabis oil the length of the paper
- Sprinkle kief on top
- Roll the joint
OR
- Load the paper with flower
- Sprinkle with kief
- Roll the joint
- Add 1-3 lines of cannabis oil down the length of the joint wherever there’s weed
And remember, moonrocks—even the “cheat” methods above—will be much stronger than smoking a bowl of flower. Please smoke responsibly.
