In recent years, the number of celebrities going public about their marijuana use has been growing.
Everyone knows that Snoop Dogg and Seth Rogen smoke pot. Other celebrities have continued to fly under the radar, despite opening up about how much they enjoy recreational cannabis (or rely on medical marijuana). A few have even begun their own cannabis businesses.
And while celebrities smoking pot or entering the cannabis industry isn’t anything new, it’s worth exploring the wide range of role models who are taking a stance and saying that responsible cannabis use isn’t anything to be ashamed of.
With that, here are 6 celebrities you may not have known smoke weed (and 3 with their own marijuana businesses).
Celebrities Who Smoke Pot
1. Patrick Stewart
Beloved actor and ageless wonder Patrick Stewart made waves when he announced that he is a daily cannabis consumer. The always-surprising, never-disappointing Stewart uses cannabis to help alleviate debilitating pain caused by arthritis. It’s a way for the actor to function during the day and sleep better at night.

2. Charlize Theron
Charlize Theron doesn’t smoke pot currently, but she doesn’t hide the fact that she used to be a daily wake-and-baker, or that she’s “open to retrying it.”
Specifically, Theron notes that she has insomnia and would rather find a cannabis strain that helps her sleep than continue using sleeping pills.
3. Olivia Newton-John
Olivia Newton-John is a Grammy-winning singer/songwriter, beloved actress, and medicinal marijuana user. The Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness and Research Centre in Melbourne was named after the icon after her initial battle with and recovery from breast cancer.
As she told News Corp Australia, “I use medicinal cannabis, which is really important for pain and healing.”
4. Andrew Garfield & Emma Stone
When Andrew Garfield (The Amazing Spider-Man) turned 29, he went to Disneyland with a handful of friends and then-girlfriend Emma Stone. According to Garfield, “We went to Disneyland. We ate pot brownies. It was literally heaven.”
“I freaked out on It’s a Small World. I was like, ‘It is a f-ing small world.’”
5. Richard Branson
British billionaire and founder of Virgin Group Richard Branson told GQ in a 2007 interview that he had smoked marijuana with his son. According to Branson, “I’d rather my son did it in front of me than behind closed doors.”
In an interview with Business Insider (above), Branson talks about his support for legalization and responsible cannabis consumption.
6. Elon Musk
Tesla CEO and business magnate Elon Musk gave the business world a surprise when he shared a joint with Joe Rogan on the popular podcast, The Joe Rogan Experience.
Tesla stocks dropped after the appearance, which is a shame since marijuana is legal in California (where the podcast was recorded) and Musk is an adult. You could even argue that Musk didn’t inhale–at least in the above clip. It just goes to show that while cannabis use is on the rise, it still has a ways to go.
And celebrities being open about their use is a powerful way to raise awareness and show that cannabis use doesn’t mean you’re a stereotypical “stoner.”

1.Chelsea Handler
In February of 2018, Chelsea Handler announced to her Instagram followers that “I’m going to come out with my own line of weed.”
She went on to say, “I want people to understand that you don’t have to get blottoed, you can get a little, nice buzz to take the edge off.”
2. Mike Tyson
In December of 2017, former Heavyweight Champion Mike Tyson broke ground on a 40-acre cannabis resort in California City. Tyson Ranch will feature 20-acres of land for cultivation that “will allow master growers to have maximum control of their environment.”
Additionally, Tyson Ranch will host the Tyson Cultivation School, hydro-feed plant and supply store, extraction facility, edible factory, as well as an amphitheater and premium “glamping” cabins and campgrounds.
3. Melissa Etheridge
Etheridge has been an open advocate for the medicinal applications of cannabis ever since she used the drug to help conquer cancer treatment. She now has her own line of cannabis-infused wine tinctures, Know Label, which she describes on an episode of Between Two Strains (check it out in the video above).
“I realized that cannabis is such good medicine… I have to work to make this available to everyone.”
Celebrities: They Smoke Pot Just Like Us
Cannabis consumers come in all shapes and sizes. Some write blog posts for a dispensary… others own billion dollar companies and are known around the world.
Whether you’re smoking recreationally or medicinally, you’re in good company.
